More About Us
Verve bar and Bistro started life back in the 50’s when Gillman Village was better known as Gillman Barracks, a home for the British troops first established just before World War II by General Sir Webb Gillman who was sent to Singapore in 1927 to report on the defences of the new navel base.
Despite the recommendations of General Gillman and his committee, it was to be many years before the new coastal artillery defences were ready for action. Changes of government in Britain brought postponement, renewed construction and postponement yet again. The Second World War in Europe war had started before defences were complete. Even then, defences against aircraft and an attack by land forces were poor in the extreme. Evidence that Singapore was vulnerable to an attack from the north was again ignored on several occasions.
On February 15th 1942 The British Commander in Singapore, General A.E. Percival surrendered Singapore to the Japanese. They had surprised the British Troops by invading from the North.
After the war, the British War Office in London established the Army Kinema Corporation and set up the Regal Cinema at Gillman Barracks to entertain the British troops stationed here –The Regal eventually became Verve Bar & Bistro however you can still see the AKC (Army Kinima Corporation) logo proudly displayed on the side of our building just above the decking canopy.
