 What we offer

Catch a film that could change your life – a film about other people that evokes the strongest personal emotions in you – pleasure, pain, alienation, empathy…. Or a film about stories set in the middle of nowhere, in places you didn’t know existed, but now desperately want to visit...

Keep an open mind, you might not always like what you see, but it will be challenging and rewarding! Come down to The Picturehouse, you never know what might hit you.

 Why we are special

The Picturehouse film line-up features a number of different programmes. We present films from established Contemporary Master directors such as Hou Hsiao Hsien as well as cutting edge fare from up and coming film-makers. We also have World Cinema exploring issues, culture and lives from far off places, with a special interest in Asian Cinema, and closer to home, a Singapore Showcase exploring local work. Other programmes include Different Perspectives looking at different genres such as documentaries or musicals, or non-conventional presentations such as omnibuses, short films and video.

You can be a part of the international film buzz, by catching first runs of the latest films and festival winners exclusively at The Picturehouse; or you can build your knowledge and enjoyment of different themes through the various film series and film festivals we organise. We also organise various film related activities such as talks, meet the film maker sessions and workshops, to enhance your film going experience.

Also, keep in mind that The Picturehouse is more than just a cinema; it is a passion for quality independent films. Watch out for films and festivals labeled The Picturehouse Selection in other cinemas – these are films that we believe also share the spirit of The Picturehouse, and should be worth a look.

 What You Can Experience

The Picturehouse was originally launched in 1990, at a time when film goers were exposed only to mainstream commercial films. Early independent films like Pulp Fiction, The Wedding Banquet, La Femme Nikita and Cinema Paradiso were all screened exclusively at The Picturehouse, and many Singaporeans remember experiencing their first foreign and arthouse titles there.

The original Picturehouse cinema was a stand-alone hall with one screen and 220 seats, located next to the historic Cathay Building. Gazetted as a heritage site in Singapore, The Cathay Building was the country’s first skyscraper when it opened in 1939. The Picturehouse was eventually shut down in 2000, when the whole building complex was marked for renovations. Now in 2006, The Picturehouse is relaunched as part of The Cathay Cineplex at The Cathay Building. With a spanking new logo, new team and new cutting edge films, The Picturehouse is ready to welcome back old friends and new guests.

The Picturehouse is owned and operated by Cathay Cineplexes Pte Ltd, and managed by Cathay-Keris Films, the distribution arm of the cinema chain. Cathay-Keris Films was originally a film production studio producing over 150 Malay language films in Singapore from the 1950s to the 1970s. It is a leading distributor of independent films in Singapore and Malaysia today.
