What we do and how you can help

Breast Cancer is the top most common cancer affecting Singaporean women.  Every year, about 1,350 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 313 women die from it*.

Early detection and treatment of breast cancer is likely to carry a better prognosis and increases the chance of survival before the disease becomes life threatening.  Yet, only 41% of women aged 50-69 years reported going for a mammogram in the past two years**.

For this reason, BCF has been playing a strategic role to educate and empower women with the tools for early detection. Knowing the facts and symptoms associated with the condition, regular breast self-examinations and going for annual mammograms are the first steps women can take to be in control of their breast health.

For breast cancer patients who find fighting breast cancer to be one of the toughest challenges in their lives, BCF provides hope, support and encouragement.  Our Support Programmes are designed to provide emotional support for patients as they undergo treatments, inspire survivors to regain their confidence and engage affected family members to help their loved ones enhance their quality of life.

As a non-profit organisation, BCF relies solely on the generosity of public donors and corporations to fund our year-round public outreach and support programmes amounting to $1 million annually.

 Why we are special

BCF adopts a three-prong approach, that combines awareness and education, advocacy for early detection, and support for women with breast cancer as well as affected family members and others to achieve our objectives.

 Awareness and Education Programme
Through its Awareness and Education Programme, BCF reaches out to all levels of society regardless of gender, profession or ethnic group. We believe that by doing so more people will not only become aware of breast cancer and related issues but also become our partners in raising awareness.

Support Programme
Recognising the importance of support for newly diagnosed patients, survivors walking the road to recovery, and affected family members, BCF has in place a strong Support Programme.

1. Support Groups
BCF’s seven support groups provide a safe and understanding environment for breast cancer patients/survivors and their families to share their experiences, ask questions and seek emotional support. Each group holds monthly meetings that include sharing sessions, talks on relevant subjects and outings to places of interest.
  • English Support Group (for patients/survivors)
  • Mandarin Support Group (for patients/survivors)
  • Malay Support Group (for patients/survivors)
  • Men’s Support League (for male family members and friends of patients/survivors)
  • Expat Support Group
  • Family and Friends Support Group
  • Young women Support Group (for patients/survivors)
 2. Volunteer Counselling Programme
Helpline - 6356 0123
BCF telephone helpline is operated during office hours by BCF Volunteer Counsellors who will answer questions on breast cancer, screening and treatment, and provide emotional support.

Hospital Visit Programme
Trained BCF Volunteer Counsellors make visits to post-operative breast cancer patients before they are discharged, providing them with emotional support, share information on treatment and BCF support services. Regular visits are conducted at several hospitals and on an ad hoc basis upon requests by the patient, family, nurse or doctor.

3. Healing Through the Arts Programme
BCF Healing Through the Arts Programme is designed to engage and inspire breast cancer patients. Weekly activities such as cooking, Latin line dance, exercises and gardening are conducted to improve their self-esteem and overall well-being.
